This ocean inspired nail art look had everyone all gooey eyed last week on our social media sites, so we thought it would be selfish of us not to share the secrets of how we created it!
It looks a lot more complicated than it actually is and took far less time than originally anticipated. The only thing you will need to prepare yourself for is a little mess. If you dread that little nail polish splatter on the side of your nail then you may not appreciate this technique, but power through and you will love the results and that initial mess will all be worth it!
To create this nail look we used only a handful of things; Skinny Jeans, Mint Cream and Glitter Glam nail polish, e.l.f. blending wedges, cotton buds and nail polish remover. We love the look that these two nail polishes create and picking two contrasting colours will allow you to get the best results possible.
Step 1: Preparing your nails is a step many people forget about but it’s just as important as every other step. Make sure your nails are free of all previous nail polish, are buffed, polished and filed and ready to go!
Step 2: Next you will need to pick one of your colours to apply all over the nail. This step just means that when it comes to creating the dip-dye effect you won’t have to do thousands of layers. We recommend applying the lighter shade of the polishes first as the darker shade could show through if done before.
Step 3: Wait for the all over colour to dry and you’re ready to begin the dip-dye process! Grab your blending wedge and draw two horizontal stripes with the polishes as shown in the photo. Bare in mind which colour you want to be on the top and the bottom and place these in the order you prefer. Once your sponge is ready begin by dabbing the sponge lightly on the nail – this nail look is achieved by going back and adding more polish to the sponge until the desired look is achieved. Be patient and after a while of adding more polish to your sponge and dabbing away you’ll start to see the effect working.
Step 4: The previous step was a messy one and now the clean-up begins! Take a cotton bud and nail polish and begin cleaning around the edges of your nail. You may need to use a cotton pad if you were a little messier but the cotton bud will allow you to get right around the nail and leave a tidy edge. No one will ever know the mess that existed before!
Step 5: Once the tidy up is complete and the polish is completely dry (the length of this will depend on how many layers of dabbing you did!) you can move on to finishing touches. We applied Glitter Glam, a sparkly nail polish as our final step in this nail look. The glitter nail polish gave the ocean inspired nails a little something extra!
We hope you love this nail look as much as we do, it will be a perfect nail look for the summer! If you do give this nail look a go then don’t forget to tag us in your photos so we can see how you all got on!
